Privacy & community guidelines
Lily's Second Chance is a small, volunteer-spirited project to help senior dogs get adopted. We keep what we collect to a minimum, and we never sell your information. Here’s exactly how it works.
What we collect
We only collect the information you choose to give us. Depending on how you use the site, that may include:
- Email alerts: your email address and the search filters you ask us to watch (state, breed, or keyword), so we can email you when a matching senior dog is listed.
- Messages & memorials: the name or initials you enter, an optional location, your message or memorial text, and — for memorials — optional details about your dog and an optional photo. You may also include an email address, which is never shown publicly.
How we use it
- To show approved messages and memorials publicly on this site.
- To send the email alerts or memorial updates you signed up for.
- To contact you only if we genuinely need to about something you submitted.
We do notsell, rent, or trade your personal information, and we don’t use it for advertising.
Email & consent
All of our emails are double opt-in: after you sign up, we send one confirmation email, and you only ever receive messages after you click to confirm. Memorial-update emails go only to people who explicitly opted in — signing up for dog-listing alerts will never add you to memorial emails, and vice-versa. Every email includes a one-click unsubscribe link, and you can opt out at any time.
Photos & what appears publicly
When you submit a message or memorial, only the public fields appear on the site once approved — your name or initials, location, message, memorial details, and any photo you add. Your email address is kept private and is visible only to our moderators. Photos are stored privately and are shown publicly only after a memorial is approved.
Moderation & community guidelines
This is a space for kindness, support, and remembrance. Every message and memorial is reviewed — automatically and, when needed, by a person — before it appears. We may decline or remove anything that is spam or advertising, hateful or abusive, a scam, or otherwise not in the spirit of honoring senior dogs. By submitting, you confirm you have the right to share what you post and that it may be displayed publicly. To request removal of something you submitted, just reach out.
Third-party services we rely on
To keep the site useful and lightweight, a few trusted services help power specific features. We share only what each feature needs, and never your community submissions or alert details:
- Google (vet & shelter directories): our vet and shelter & rescuedirectories search the Google Places API and link to Google Maps. Listings, ratings, hours, and reviews come from Google and may be out of date — always confirm directly with the organization. Your use of Google’s data is also governed by the Google Privacy Policy (opens in a new tab). We store only coarse, anonymous search regions (state, city, and a partial ZIP) to learn where senior pets need more help — never your full ZIP, search keywords, or any personal or medical details.
- Analytics: we use our own lightweight visit counting and Google Analytics to understand which pages and features are most helpful, in aggregate. Neither loads until you accept via the Cookie preferencessection below — declining, or not yet deciding, means no analytics data is collected at all. We do not use either for advertising or to identify you personally.
- Facebook/Meta Pixel: we use the Meta Pixel to understand how visitors from our Facebook Page find and use the site, and to measure our Facebook posts and ads. It sets a cookie and shares your page views with Meta; it is governed by Meta’s Privacy Policy (opens in a new tab). You can withdraw or change your consent at any time using the Cookie preferencessection below, or opt out through your browser’s tracking-protection settings, or Meta’s own ad preferences (opens in a new tab).
- Email delivery: confirmation, alert, and memorial-update emails are sent through our email provider solely to deliver the messages you signed up for.
Facebook Page comments & auto-replies
We share senior-dog posts on our Facebook Page and use an automated assistant, built with Meta’s official Facebook tools, to help our small volunteer team respond to comments on those posts. Here is exactly what we handle and how:
- What we receive:when you comment on one of our Page posts, Facebook notifies us of the comment’s text, your public name and Facebook ID, and the post it belongs to. We never access private messages or anything beyond public comments on our own Page.
- How we use it:the assistant reads the comment and drafts a friendly, helpful reply (for example, answering “Is this dog still available?”). Drafting uses an AI service that processes the comment text only to generate that reply. Straightforward, safe replies may be posted publicly under your comment automatically; anything sensitive or uncertain is held for a human volunteer to review, edit, or skip.
- What we store:only the comment, your public name and ID, our reply, and basic status flags — solely to generate a reply and avoid replying twice. We never sell or share this information, and we never use it for advertising.
- Your control:you can edit or delete your own comment on Facebook at any time, and you can ask us to delete the record we keep of it (see “Contact & data requests” below). Your use of Facebook is also governed by the Meta Privacy Policy (opens in a new tab).
Cookie preferences
Use the controls below to accept or decline analytics and tracking cookies — or to change a decision you made earlier. Your preference is saved for one year and takes effect immediately on this page (a page reload may be needed elsewhere).
