Meet HUGO

Meet Hugo, the senior staffie! Hugo arrived to the Shelter after his previous guardian was moving and unable to find dog-friendly housing. Hugo has history living with another large breed dog, chickens and cats. Hugo previously lived outdoors but has been going on overnights with one of our volunteers and she confirmed that he is totally potty trained and seems very relaxed and comfortable in the house. Hugo loves to play with toys. He enjoys riding in the car and will lay down until he is at his destination. Since his arrival at the Shelter, staff have observed that he is easy going, loves to play fetch with tennis balls and has kept a tidy kennel. At the Shelter, he met a spirited small breed dog and did well. A home with other animals may be a fit with a slow, thoughtful introduction. If you are looking for a spirited dog who has some wisdom under his belt – consider meeting Hugo today! The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
